L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative required by the body for energy production from fat metabolism.

Metabolic Analysis Labs, Inc., established in 1981, is a pioneer in L-Carnitine analysis. We are an independent referral laboratory located in Madison, Wisconsin specializing in L-Carnitine testing for clinical and veterinary diagnosis, product quality control, and research. Our original focus was the diagnosis of carnitine deficiency, an inherited defect of fatty acid metabolism which prior to its discovery often proved fatal when undetected in newborn infants. Our analytical services now include carnitine measurement in solid, powdered, and liquid products and all types of biological samples.

L-Carnitine is measured using a highly sensitive multi-step radioenzymatic technique utilizing a carbon-14 tracer. The method is specific for the biologically active L-isomer. The sensitivity of the method makes it ideal for detecting low levels of carnitine in complex matrices, and allows us to work with very small quantities of sample.
